The latest recipes from some of the top chefs in the North West and North Wales.
Last week we brought you the INOUT Bread-Off. This week, INOUT magazine proudly presents its first Choc-off, in honour of, well, liking chocolate. With 605,000 tonnes of chocolate consumed in the UK each year, it's fair to say that Brits love the stuff. Using chocolate as our main ingredient, we set out to make the perfect pudding. Here's what we came up with:
Chocolate One - Marshmallow and Sultana Chocolate Fridge Cake
Colourful, delicious and with lots of different textures, this cake is pleasing to the eye and the taste buds. The soft marshmallows and sultanas complement the crunchy nuts and biscuits. It tastes heavenly, although it's a bit on the naughty side, given the high sugar content. Quick and easy to make, this is a great option if you're a bit pushed for time. The cake was made using a recipe from Jamie Oliver.
Chocolate two - Beetroot Chocolate Brownies
Sounds like a bit of an odd pairing. But the addition of the beetroot made the brownies moist and soft, without losing any of the chocolate flavour. And the chocolate/beetroot combination means that this tasty treat has around half the amount of fat in that regular brownies do. The smell was a little disconcerting, but the earthy aroma of the brownie doesn't match up to the rich chocolaty taste. The brownies were made using a River Cottage recipe.
Chocolate three - White Chocolate and Pistachio Panna Cotta
An adventurous and sophisticated choice, this luxurious dessert would be a wonderful way to round off a dinner party. Deliciously creamy, it is a great choice for lovers of white chocolate. A great accompaniment to this is fresh raspberries, as the sharp taste cuts right through the richness. The texture is a bit mismanaged, as it ended up slightly too firm, as white chocolate is notoriously difficult to cook with. This doesn't take away from the rich, nutty flavour. This pudding was made using a BBC Food recipe.
A valiant effort from all three chocolatiers, but the brownies just edged it. We may have been a little premature, seeing as National Chocolate Week isn't until October, but it was a great way to round off the week!
